ROC President Ma Ying-jeou’s inauguration will be held at the Presidential Office in Taipei City between 9:00 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. May 20. The event will be streamed live in Chinese and English on the office website, and in Japanese and Vietnamese on the Radio Taiwan International website, the Presidential Office said May 16.


The software piracy rate in Taiwan stood at 37 percent last year, below the global average of 42 percent and Asia-Pacific average of 60 percent, according to a survey by Business Software Alliance and International Data Corp. released May 15. Among the four Asian dragons, Singapore was ahead of Taiwan at 33 percent, while South Korea and Hong Kong trailed at 40 percent and 43 percent, respectively.


Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing signed a memorandum of understanding with Tokyo-based Miracle Linux Corp. May 15 on Clonezilla software cooperation. Clonezilla, developed by the NCHC, is a free software disaster recovery, disk cloning and deployment solution. It has been downloaded more than 5.5 million times since being released in 2003.


Academia Sinica’s Laboratory for Climate Change Research, established with funding from the National Science Council, was officially launched May 16. Hsu Huang-hsiung, a researcher at the institute’s Research Center for Environmental Changes, will serve as director. Under a five-year program, the lab will cultivate a domestic research team to develop key capacities for climate change simulation and interpretation. (SB-THN)
